Mayflower Theatre will be presenting a “Relaxed Performance” of The Pirates of Penzance on Saturday 6 August at 3.00pm and supporting local charity Rose Road. This will form part of the three day run of Mayflower Theatre’s Summer Youth production from 5-7 August.

A Relaxed Performance means that the theatre will welcome people who will benefit from a more relaxed environment, including people on the autism spectrum, sensory and communication difficulties, or a learning disability. At this performance there will be a relaxed attitude to noise and movement in the auditorium but there will be no changes to the production content. It has previously been described as ‘the opposite of the quiet carriage on the train.’

Mayflower Theatre Chief Executive, Michael Ockwell who is directing the project said, “I am delighted that we are able to support Rose Road with this Relaxed Performance. We are reconfiguring some of the seating in the stalls to allow more wheelchair spaces and therefore offer families the rare opportunity to experience a theatre show together. I believe this will make it an extraordinary experience for the Summer Youth Project participants to perform to a wide audience and we will also help raise much needed funds for the amazing team at Rose Road and we couldn’t do this without the valuable support of our show sponsors Paris Smith.”

The Pirates of Penzance is a spirited hilarious adventure following a sentimental band of rogues and their swash buckling Pirate King. Frederic, the hero must remain an apprentice to the pirate gang until his 21st Birthday, which is all very well… Unless you were born on 29th February in a leap year!

With blundering policemen, a very modern Major-General, and a sensational score of memorable songs, this is a Gilbert and Sullivan classic with a Broadway twist.
