THIS is the harsh tale of the title character’s terrible vengeance on her husband Jason (Danny McNamee) for his dropping her for a younger and better connected woman.

Lighting designer Catherine Hyde makes an impressive contribution, her effects combining with a two level set to allow scope for fluid and varied stage action.

Preceded by an ominous chorus, Angharad Morgan, as the understandably concerned nurse to the estranged couple’s two sons, gives a fine opening speech, establishing a passionate and tense mood that never lets up and is easily maintained by the rest of an excellent cast.

Kae Yeboah has tremendous authority as Medea. We can see how her actions are driven by her hopeless position as well as her anger.

Director Tanya Gilmore’s use of the chorus as incidental characters is entirely successful, attempts to choreograph their movements across the stage slightly less so, but never risible.
