COMING out of the staffroom of an English language school for foreigners is a comedy, peppered with loneliness and loss.

The staff are a motley crew, with a discreetly gay co-principal, a middle aged woman with parent issues, a deceived and self-deceiving girlfriend and the increasingly nebulous namesake, St John Quartermaine (Rupert Bogarde), to name but a few.

The strength of the piece lies in the subtle nuances and duplicitous narrative.

The challenge is to expose the comedy as well as the irony of the piece.

The cast excelled in creating something believable and compelling.

The characters seemed to visibly age before our eyes, as their lives unfold and their stories become more poignant, right to the bleak end.

All deserve a mention, including the director (Phil Rainforth), wardrobe mistress (Di Buck) and set and props team (Rob Davis and Brian Buck).

Simply superb!
