A charity concert for Nepal earthquake victims raised more £500 in cash and boosted the stock of a charity shop and foodbank into the bargain.

Saturday night’s gig organised by Oxfam Music, at Southampton’s newest venue the 1865 in Brusnwick Place, featured local acts Acrington Stanley, Soma High, Sleeping Tigers, Beat Easton and Daniel Eagle The audience were asked to make a £3 donation to the Nepal appeal or bring along goods for the Oxfam Music or the foodbank, which is run by Southampton City Mission “We had roughly 100 through the door so considering what we made lots of people clearly gave extra,” said organiser Rob Milner.

This was not the first fundraising concert run by Oxfam Music.

In April an all-day gig at the Alex raised £335.76 for the "Strength to Survive" appeal which meant that the government doubled the money raised.

The headliners that night were Ra! All of the band have since gone on to volunteer at the shop and started their own series of gigs Campaign for Quiet (CFQ) to showcase the best alternative, underground bands from the south coast.

They ask all bands involved to donate their music to the shop in the run-up to the next event. "For us to get their music out to so many people whilst at the same time be raising money for Oxfam is incredible. The local bands section in the shop mirrors our CFQ nights perfectly," said Dom Cliffe from Campaign For Quiet.

Dom added that future CFQ nights would also support the foodbank.

Oxfam Music's next fundraising gig is an all-day acoustic event at Lancaster Vault on August 22 and the next Campaign for Quiet show is July 26 at The Alex.
