IT was a word that not even the Oxford Dictionary could ignore for too long.

And back in 2010 it made its debut in the hallowed pages, having entered our lexicon a few years earlier.

Glamping.

Camping in a tent, but not as we had always known it.

Camping had gone upmarket. Glammed up, in other words.

A night out under the stars would never be the same again.

It's a great word, glamping, and its explosion into our popular language has gone hand in hand with the stellar rise of festivals.

There are literally hundreds of festivals now, covering all genres of music as well as literary, food and drink.

Summer festivals are big business - we have come a long way from the days of the first Glastonbury in 1970, which in itself came two years after the historic inaugural Isle of Wight festival - and at the vanguard of them, glamping wise, are the bell tents.

Beautiful canvas structures offering the sort of facilities often found in a boutique hotel, they are anything but a 21st century creation.

For example, British soldiers camped out in them during the Crimean War back in the 1850s.

Hotel Bell Tent are one of the biggest suppliers of them at festival and sporting events across the country.

They have already sold out at the CarFest south event taking place in Overton, north, but still have a few tents left for the CarFest north festival in Cheshire.

Underlining the huge growth of glamping, they have also sold out at the Camp Bestival festival in east Dorset towards the end of this month.

Hampshire Chronicle:

This week, they have set up their own bell tent village at the Larmer Tree festival on the Wiltshire/Dorset border south west of Salisbury, which is this year celebrating its 25th anniversary.

From the small acorn of the 1990 one-day event which attracted a crowd of 150, the Larmer Tree is now a five-day festival with a licence to hold 5,000 party-goers offering entertainment for all ages - a few years ago it was voted Family Festival of the Year.

The legendary Sir Tom Jones is playing tonight and tomorrow night, with the likes of The Levellers, festival folk favourites Bellowhead and comedians Ed Byrne and Bill Bailey among a packed festival bill which takes place in a myriad of stages and tents under cover and out in the open air.

Hampshire Chronicle:

Hotel Bell Tent's facilities take glamping to a wonderful new level of opulence, with luxury inflatable mattresses, doormats, tables, mirrors, tea-light chandeliers and, for the luxury tents, special 13.5 tog duvets to keep you ultra warm just a few feet from the chill of the night air.

And there's so much more, including a special communal area for Hotel Bell Tent customers, a pamper room - complete with lit up Hollywood dressing room style mirrors! - easy access to the best festival site toilets and showers, and a reception area open every morning.

The Daily Echo has teamed up with Hotel Bell Tent to offer our website visitors a special promotion for their boutique camping options at Larmer Tree festival, which really starts in earnest tomorrow.

You can get 15 per cent off the normal Hotel Bell Tent rates by phoning 07525050744 and mentioning you have read this article on the Southern Daily Echo website.
