THERE will be some summer chills descending on Southampton city centre this Friday (June 26) when a new ghost tour takes to the streets.

A medieval knight, a plague doctor, a Victorian lady and the member of naval press gang are just some of the figures from the past who will be appearing to recount their grizzly tales.

The event is the first to be staged in the city by Hampshire firm Super Natural Tours, run by Jensen House from Southampton and James Kemp from Portsmouth, who regularly run spooky trails in Winchester.

James says he has been fascinated by ghosts since a poltergeist threw a cup at him when he was six at a friend's house. He founded Supernatural Tours in 2006 with Jenson, who features in the book Haunted Southampton and has investigated many of city's most haunted locations.

Their trail will take in the Medieval Merchants House in French Street, believed by haunted by prosperous merchant John Fortin, the Duke of Wellington pub where legend has it that the ghost of teenager accidentally killed by the press gang appears to customers, and the Dolphin Hotel, the haunt of six ghosts including medieval workman Tom, who was killed in the 1200s during the construction of the vaults beneath the present building.

Other landmarks visited on the tour, which starts from Tudor House at 8.30pm, include the Bargate, the Vaults and the Red Lion.

The tour costs £6 per person and places can be booked at supernatural-tours.co.uk. The firm aims to run a monthly Southampton tour, usually on the final Friday. The next is scheduled for July 31.
