THEATRE toilets inspired by James Bond have given a whole new meaning to spending a penny at one Hampshire theatre.

Given the task of designing the refurbishment of the toilets in the art deco Plaza Theatre in Romsey, Romsey Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society (RAODS) member Dave Francis knew just where to look.

He studied the London Underground scenes in the Bond film Skyfall because many of the stations were also built in the 1930s, in keeping with the theatre.

The new facilities were opened earlier this month.

RAODS president Anne Gray received a 1931 penny (the year the Plaza was built) from builder Dean Chapman, who put Dave Francis’ designs into practice.

The Green Room at the Plaza has also been freshly painted with a refurbishment of the main theatre doors - and a fire alarm system - to follow soon.

All this was achieved through the Plaza’s own funds and a £25,000 grant from Test Valley Borough Council.
