THE Point is on the hunt for singers to form a choir for a ground-breaking performance this spring.

It is particularly unusual because it involves performers and audience members hugging!

Called HUG, Verity Standen’s unique acapella sound bath, will visit The Point following its acclaimed run at the Edinburgh Festival, which saw the performance nominated for a Total Theatre Award.

Verity is looking for singers to perform in the choir for the performances at the Eastleigh venue on March 11, 12 and 13.

HUG is an interactive performance for 30 people at a time. Each audience member is blindfolded and experiences the performance through sound, breath and vibrations of the body as they are hugged by a choir member as they deliver the song.

Owen Calvert-Lyons, artistic director at The Point, said that local people were needed to make up the choir.

He said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for anyone who is passionate about singing.”

Auditions for the performance are being held on January 24 from noon until 5pm.

Singers should have experience of choral singing and performance and be confident holding their own harmony amongst a room of voices. There are also moments of improvisation.

There is no need to read music, as Verity will teach the entire piece by ear but as this is an intimate performance, singers should be comfortable with hugging audience members while singing.

Singers need to be available from March 7 to 10 for rehearsals, with performances from March 11 to 13.
