HE is the twinkle-toed Hampshire pensioner in a flat cap who’s taking the Internet by storm.

Ronald Burgess became an Web sensation when his dancing in Winchester High Street was caught on camera and posted online.

The video has so far been watched by more than 45,000 people.

The 87-year-old spends hours boogieing to buskers and chatting to passers-by.

“I just love doing it,” he told the Daily Echo. “We all love dancing – dancing keeps you fit.”

“I started back when I was 16. A group of us used to go out and have a good time. We usually ended up dancing at night.”

But he never took dance lessons and doesn’t have a name for his now-famous bop, saying he goes wherever the music takes him.

“I just do what I feel like,” he said, “but you can’t do anything too quick at my age.”

The pensioner has strutted his stuff on the streets of Winchester since the death of his wife, Dorothy, in 1998.

“She was a very good dancer,” he said. “We went everywhere.”

Without his dancing partner, Ronald said he sometimes struggles to keep the moves going in old age.

“One of the things about getting older is you get leg aches and pains,” he said. “Then this comes along and it’s got me going again.

“If you can get a big group of people with drums and big bass, that kind of music gets me going.”

Despite busting his moves to everything from rock guitar to solo accordion, Ronald misses the days when dancing was at the heart of Winchester’s social scene.

He said: “All my life was dancing, but the town’s gone dead. In my day it was all dancing. There’s no bands like there used to be.”

But the video has propelled him to stardom in the city, with scores of shoppers stopping him to praise his moves and even join in.

The OAP said: “At last! I only have to go up the town and some lady will tell me something about it. It feels good.”

“I’m going to keep dancing until I die.”

It comes 18 months after Southampton secretary Ellie Cole became an Internet sensation for a video capturing her boogieing at a bus stop in Bishopstoke Road, Eastleigh.
