SET in Senlis, France in 1914 and the winner of seven César awards, including Best Actress and Best Film, Seraphine tells the remarkable true story of the mysterious painter of the same name.
Art patron Wilhelm Uhde (Tukur) discovers Séraphine Louis (Moreau) while she is working as a cleaning lady in his apartment. Despite being the laughing stock of the town – and contrary to her cruel landlady’s opinions – Séraphine is secretly a wonderfully gifted artist.
Uhde attempts to inspire confidence in the her, encouraging her to exhibit in Paris. While tracing the long-lasting friendship that developed between the two, the film also delves into Séraphine’s personal realm, her struggle and the tragedy of her deteriorating psychological state.
Seraphine is showing at Harbour Lights from today.
