SOUTHAMPTON Film Week 2009 gets under way tonight at Turner Sims Concert Hall with a glamorous drinks reception followed by the screening of an English drama.

Yasmin explores life before and after September 11, 2001, for a British muslim.

The event continues until October 10 with screenings, Q&As, workshops, quizzes and recitals across the city.

Southampton Film Week aims to create a buzz around film, to inspire people to attend different forms of film, to promote debate and to support the local film and media economy.

There’s even the chance to go to a drive in when Slumdog Millionaire, Mamma Mia and Grease are shown at WestQuay Phase 3.

The documentary Stand or Fall – From Page to Stage will be shown at the Civic Centre, while Bevois Town Primary School will host a free filmmaking workshop.

Karin Stowe will discuss her experiences in Tibet making Chronicles from a Camera: A Perpetual History and Liner Life and The Titanic Newsreel will interest historians.

The Alexandra pub hosts a film quiz and an organ recital at Southampton Guildhall will showcase music from the movies.

Harbour Lights will show a selection of digital shorts and The Arthouse has a special film night.
