SOUTHAMPTON’s independent film society The Phoenix is showing a French box-office smash on Wednesday.
Bienvenue Chez les Ch’tis (Welcome to the Sticks) is a charming, light comedy ideal for relieving the economic doom and gloom.
A French postal worker is hoping for a transfer to the beautiful Cote d’Azur, but ends up in the wet and windy North instead. Unsurprisingly, he discovers that he actually loves it and falls for it's rural charm.
This tale of the simple joys in life is showing in Building 32 at The University of Southampton.
Tickets, priced £5.50, are available from 0870 765 0763. For more details visit thephoenix.org.uk.
AT The Screen, Winchester Film Society’s Tuesday film is The Fallen Idol.
A butler working in the French embassy in London falls under suspicion when his wife accidentally falls to her death, the only witness being an impressionable young boy caught up in a bewildering world of grown-up deceptions. One of the gems of 1940s British cinema, The Fallen Idol was the first of three collaborations between Carol Reed and screenwriter Graham Greene, who later teamed up to make The Third Man. This is a re-release from the British Film Institute and is showing at 8.30pm.
