Maskers take on Minghella play
 |
| Whale Music |
The Maskers Theatre Company's next production is the late Anthony Minghella's "Whale Music," his first real theatrical success.
Set in the Isle of Wight in the 1980s, the play portrays what happens when Caroline, a university student, finds herself unexpectedly pregnant and takes time out to have her baby.
New and old friends gather round in support.
The story is an old one but her options are modern. She can have an abortion.
She can keep the child and rear it alone.
She can rear it with her friend and former teacher Kate, a lesbian, even though Caroline herself isn't gay.
Her other option is to give the child up for adoption.
"Whale Music" is an emotionally complex play.
What emerges is a funny portrait of female bonding that transcends boundaries of age, class and education.
The wonderfully written script has killer lines and makes a great night out.
It is what you would expect from the late, great Anthony Minghella.
Directed by Harry Tuffill, "Whale Music" runs from Monday 19th May to Saturday 24th May at 7.30pm in The Maskers Studio off Emsworth Road in Shirley, Southampton.
Tickets cost £5, available from the Box Office on 023 80551489.
3:55pm Wednesday 30th April 2008
