James and the Giant Peach "absolutely wonderful".
"ABSOLUTELY wonderful." That's how my 11-year-old daughter described James and the Giant Peach at the Nuffield Theatre in Southampton.
The Ronald Dahl story is adapted for stage by David Wood and directed by Russ Tunney.
It tells how orphan James escapes his evil and revolting aunts with the help of a magical overgrown fruit and giant bugs.
A talented cast of seven professional actors play the main parts supported by a 10-strong team of children.
With the help of clever lighting and imaginative costumes, they pull off the considerable challenge of recreating a fantasy world where the giant peach takes to the air supported a flock of seagulls.
A bit of imagination is required by the audience. For example, the aunts are squashed off stage by the giant peach. Cardboard cut-outs being presented as proof.
The show, which includes music and songs, is very funny in parts.
My favourite characters included Michael Cole as the morose earthworm and Julie Rose Smith as the loveable ladybird.
