Winchester Operatic Society return to the Theatre Royal, Winchester at the end of the month with The Sorcerer.
This operetta by Gilbert and Sullivan (G&S) is not one of their better-known collaborations.
Nevertheless it is a minor masterpiece that revolves around love, ambition and a magic love potion. The show runs from Tuesday 29 April to Saturday 3 May, with performances at 7:30 and a Saturday matinee at 2:30.
Directed by Max Bullough and conducted by Martin Paterson, The Sorcerer promises to be one of the most talked-about WOS G&S productions for many years.
In an updated setting of a Retirement Home staffed by the Society's best singers and occupied by the youngest pensioners you've ever seen.
Alexis and Aline, the two most eligible youngsters in the village, are to be married amidst general rejoicing and feasting. Alexis decides that to ensure true everlasting love, the couple will drink a love potion, administered by The Sorcerer, played by John Wellington-Wells.
The potion has the effect of making its victim fall in love with the first person they see on reawakening.
When the whole community drinks the mixture from the communal teapot, it's not always their intended whom they see on waking up.
Comedy and tragedy are the inevitable results.
Tickets are available from the Theatre Royal Box Office (phone 01962 840440) from £11:50-£13:50 (concessions).
