Winchester is gearing up for Mayfest
A clear sign that spring is around the corner is the news that Winchester MAYfest has just announced its exciting programme for this year's four-day festival running from May 15 to 18.
Winchester is promised four vibrant days of live music, song and dance in its streets, pubs and concert venues. The festival has attracted many well-known singers and musicians from the worlds of folk, blues, jazz and roots including Steamchicken; Tom Bliss; Jackie Oates with James Dumbleton; Craig:Morgan:Robson; The Baddest Blues Band (Ever!) who have been described as "the finest new blues band on the British scene" plus many other very talented artists.
Kick-starting MAYfest '08, the Bash on the Bridge celebrates the wealth of local folk, roots and acoustic music. And, after the huge success of the first PUBfest in 2007, there are even more pub sessions this year. Most evenings and lunchtimes, MAYfest artists will be playing live music in some of Winchester's favourite watering-holes.
The festival maintains its fun and vibrancy with over 300 dancers, informal pub sessions, a festival market on Cathedral Green and in the Square, children's entertainers, concerts and ceilidhs and again features the enormously successful primary school children's ceilidh. The festival's Saturday day of dance climaxes with One BIG Party - a ceilidh alongside a concert at the Guildhall. As in previous years, thanks to generous sponsorship and public donations, many events are free.
Full details of the events, dates, times, venues and ticket prices can be found on MAYfest's website winmayfest.co.uk. A 12 page printed programme will be soon be available in libraries, music venues, Winchester and Hampshire Tourist Offices and various pubs in Winchester.
