AN unusual art show has just been unveiled at the Great Hall in Winchester, which will be in place for the next few weeks.

The 40 Part Motet by Janet Cardiff is a sound exhibit of 40 voices played through speakers that brings together Spem in Alium by Thomas Tallis.

It has cost just under £17,000 to bring the Canadian artist’s work to Winchester, of which is half is being funded by Hampshire County Council.

Winchester City Council and the University of Winchester are paying the rest for the show, which runs until Sunday, March 20.

County council executive member for culture and recreation, Cllr Margaret Snaith-Tempia, said: “Janet’s installation follows on from the success of previous exhibitions held in the Great Hall which have included Bill Woodrow and Antony Gormley.

“In staging this event we hope to add to Winchester’s reputation as a venue for world famous art while bringing this remarkable experience to the people of Hampshire, offering them the opportunity to experience contemporary art at its very best.”
