the November production at the Chesil Theatre, Winchester is Art, a play which portrays a touching, invigorating insight into friendship. Set in contemporary France, there are three demanding male roles to be cast.
Old friends Serge, Marc and Yvan meet regularly. One day, Serge buys a “white” painting. Is the pure white painting a brilliant piece of modern art, or just a joke?
Their friendship is tested when opinions diverge. Serge is keen to be seen as an intellectual and self-assured, while Marc speaks his mind and hates pretentiousness. Yvan is the peacemaker, but with problems of his own.
Can the bonds between them be made stronger after home truths are revealed? Yasmina Reza’s award-winning dark comedy is translated with elegance and wit by Christopher Hampton.
Director, Flavia Bateson, said: “Art premièred in Paris in 1995. Since then, it has been produced worldwide and translated and performed in over 30 languages. The London production, with Albert Finney, Tom Courtenay and Ken Stott, received both the Laurence Olivier and Evening Standard Award and we are delighted to be performing this modern classic at the Chesil.”
New members are always welcome.
The reading takes place at the Chesil Theatre on Friday November 6 at 7.45pm.
Auditions follow on Sunday November 8 and Monday November 9, both at 7.45pm.
Production dates are Saturday, February 6 and Monday, February 8 to Saturday, February 13, 2010, at 7.45pm, with a matinée on Saturday, February 13, at 2.30pm.
