Family folk act in town

WATERSON: Carthy, one of the most successful and influential bands on the English folk scene, are coming to the Theatre Royal, Winchester.

They will be presenting material from albums including Broken Ground and Holy Heathens and The Old Green Man.

Norma Waterson, who came a close second to Pulp for the Mercury Music Prize in the 1990s, continues to deliver sublime vocals.

She is joined by Martin Carthy, regarded as one of the finest singers and interpreters of traditional music from the British Isles.

Their daughter, singer and fiddle player Eliza, and melodeon player and original band member, Saul Rose, complete the line-up.

Eliza Carthy, a musical talent in her own right, has been performing since her early teens and is a double Mercury Prize Award nominee.

Saul Rose has been playing melodeon for 21 years and in that time has toured all over the world.

Waterson:Carthy have garnered many music awards over the years, most recently winning the BBC Radio 2 Folk Award 2008 for best traditional song with Cold, Haily, Rainy Night.

The band will appear at the Theatre Royal in Jewry Street on Wednesday, October 28, at 8pm. Tickets cost £18, concessions £16 and theatre friends £15.50. For further information, call the box office on 01962 840440 or visit theatreroyalwinchester.co.uk.
