Choristers converge on cathedral

11:00am Thursday 25th June 2009

WINCHESTER welcomes all the Cathedral Old Choristers’ Associations for their 2009 festival this weekend.

The three-day event on June 26-28, involves music and socialising and a chance to discuss matters of importance to the associations.

Andrew Snow, secretary of Winchester Cathedral Old Choristers’ Association, said it was also a chance to promote the city: “Although we are co-ordinating the weekend festival, I feel that the cathedral, the county council and the city council all have the opportunity, as joint hosts, to welcome delegates to Winchester and to Hampshire, and all that it has to offer.”

There is a civic reception in Winchester Guildhall on Friday and a banquet is being held in The Great Hall on Saturday.

Winchester is an apt place to hold the event, as the cathedral is known nationally and internationally for the excellence of its choral foundation.

The Boy Choristers are educated at The Pilgrims’ School, along with the Quiristers of the Chapel of Winchester College.

All are very welcome to attend The Festival Evensong at 5.30pm in the cathedral, where Andrew Lumsden, organist and director of music, will conduct the Cathedral Choir, who will be joined by the Old Choristers’ Choir.
