There’s a chance to tour one of the Test Valley’s most distinctive houses over the next week.

Houghton Lodge and Gardens has organised two house tours – on Saturday, October 4 and Friday, October 10.

The stunning 18th century cottage orné (decorated cottage), set above the River Test, is an a Grade II* Historic House and only Hampshire finalist in Country Life and Savills: England’s Finest House Award 2011.

The house, owned by the Busk family, was built in 1793 and probably intended as a fishing lodge.

Inside, the circular music room has a domed ceiling adorned with trompe l’oeil butterflies and flowers, and the dining room is decorated with silk hand-painted wallpaper from China.

“ Whilst the house is open to pre-booked groups throughout the year, so many of our regular visitors ask us to see inside and so we thought we would end our 2014 season with two tours of the house” said Sophie Busk, daughter-in-law of the owner, Martin Busk.

“We enjoy showing visitors around the house which is still very much a family home – we have plenty of stories to tell too”

Tours will start at 11am with registration in the Tea House from 10.30am onwards.

Tickets cost £12 per person and include access to the gardens. Pre-booking is essential on 023 80001655 or info@houghtonlodge.co.uk.
