The Point in Eastleigh has launched its new Young People's Theatre, aimed at young people of all ages in and around the borough.

Heidi Vaughan, the newly-appointed Young People's Theatre director, aims to recruit up to 150 enthusiastic youngsters to begin classes in three different age groups after Christmas. The Young People's Theatre (YPT) runs weekly workshops at The Point in three age groups - 8 to 12, 12 to 15, and 16 to 20-year-olds.

Heidi enthused: "Young people are invited to join, regardless of ability, education, or experience. There are no auditions. You just need bags of enthusiasm and the commitment to come to weekly sessions."

As well as exploring professional theatre practices and skills, the groups will work towards productions which will be staged at The Point.

Heidi added: "The special feature of YPT is that it gives access to the whole range of skills within the professional working environment of The Point, one of the South-East's busiest and most popular arts venues.

"Not only are the tutors professional theatre practitioners, who are engaged with the industry on an ongoing basis, but the students will also have access to the technical, marketing and arts development expertise of the venue."

As well as the weekly youth theatre sessions, Heidi has devised ad hoc projects for those youngsters who find it difficult to commit to a regular slot. Workshops and playdays will be on offer at weekends and in school holidays, sometimes with professional theatre companies touring to the venue.

Heidi continued: "But it's not just those who can get to Eastleigh that will benefit. We will also have in place an outreach programme for schools and young people's groups. Drama workshops can be arranged and tailored to suit the needs of a particular set of students."

Heidi Vaughan joins The Point from a background in professional theatre, having worked with The Nuffield Theatre, in Southampton, Bath Theatre Royal, and Bristol Old Vic.
