Idiot3 go from strength to strength

THREE very different bands took over Hamptons Bar in Southampton on Friday night.

The tiny venue has been transformed from an R'n'B stronghold to a live music haven and Idiot3 headlined last week, preceded by The Science of 8 Limbs and The Choices We Make.

First up were The Science of 8 Limbs, who were unusual in that there were just two of them, playing drums and guitar, and they performed a purely instrumental set.

Their performance was skilled, striking and intense. This band had a huge dollop of Nivana angst about them, without the words obviously, but their sound was at times too loud and the diversity of their material was hampered by only having two instruments and no vocals.

Next up were The Choices We Make, who informed the crowd that Friday's gig was their second to last as the youngsters were splitting up to go to university.

This quintet's sound was pretty run-of-the-mill indie pop rock, which seems to be so abundant these days, but their set was executed with passion from what was obviously a talented band, the individual members of which will, I'm sure, go on to make sweet music elsewhere.

Idiot3 dominated the stage, both literally and metaphorically, as they belted out songs from their new EP, Monster and The Grey Goose.

The Hamptons audience couldn't help but move and sing along to the band's powerful rock ballads and catchy anthems.

It was certainly an intimate performance as the quartet were squished onto the small stage, but not as squashed as The Choices We Make, it has to be said.

Idiot3 are going from strength to strength. They gel so well as a band, their music is solid, well written and expertly played, and the radio stations seem to be picking up on this at last. Good luck to them!
