A BURNING dustcart was escorted through the streets of Winchester by firefighters and the police yesterday afternoon (August 28).
Rubbish inside the Serco vehicle had ignited at about 2pm while the vehicle was on a round in Springvale Road, Kings Worthy.
Firefighters were hampered from tackling the flames inside the vehicle because the hydraulics were jammed.
So the dustcart, which was emitting a lot of smoke, was driven by a Serco employee the three miles from Kings Worthy through the city centre to the company depot in Bar End Road where the machine could be opened and the flames put out.
Said one firefighter: "It was quite a sight. There was us and several police cars with lights flashing."
