Slow heavy load on M3
DRIVERS on the M3 near Winchester on Sunday (February 17) morning can expect to see a large load travelling at 5mph.
A giant new electricity transformer for National Grid's high-voltage substation at Bramley near Basingstoke is due to be delivered.
The supergrid transformer (SGT) will be making the final leg of its journey from Austria via Southampton Docks.
The vehicles and trailer transporting the load are 67m long and 4.7m wide.
The delivery vehicles have a maximum speed of 5mph and the SGT weighs 137 tonnes. The total weight of transport and SGT is 225 tonnes.
Abnormal Load Engineering Limited (ALE), which is moving the transformer on National Grid's behalf, has worked closely with the local authorities and emergency services to devise the route and the vehicle will have a police escort throughout its journey.
The vehicle will leave Southampton's Western Docks at approximately 6am and head towards the A33 Redbridge Road.
Travelling north-west, the vehicle will continue onto the M271 and join the M27 eastbound at junction 3. At junction 4, it will exit left and join the M3 northbound.
At Basingstoke, the vehicle will leave the motorway at junction 6 and take the first exit onto the A339 and then the A340.
After approximately three miles the vehicle will turn right into Bramley Road, continuing on to Boars Bridge, Silchester Road, The Street and finally into Minchens Lane where it will arrive at the substation.
