FOR those struggling to reach the bottle bank, a new firm is offering Winchester residents the chance to have jars and bottles collected from their door.
Recycling company, Genie, already operates in Southampton, and is now coming to Winchester.
Neither city currently has a council-run doorstep glass collection scheme, and Genie believes that there is a gap in the market.
It provides residents with a branded container, which it collects every month or fortnight, leaving a fresh cleaned box in its place.
The glass is then turned into new bottles and jars, or can be used to make fibre optic cables, insulation and even sand for golf course bunkers.
Genie is the brainchild of Claire Adam, who is also the founder of Southampton-based Substance PR.
She said: "When I chatted to people I realised that they want to recycle their glass, but they end up with jars and bottles hanging around the home for weeks and months on end.
"The Genie service has been set up to make things easier for those people, helping them to recycle more efficiently.
"Unlike most materials, glass can be recycled again and again without any loss of purity or clarity.
"It uses much less energy to recycle glass into new products than it does to create them from scratch, so we should be recycling as much of it as possible," she said.
The service costs £3.50 per month for monthly collections, and there is a joining fee of £8.
