A WINCHESTER worker has been named a runner up for a national in-house coffee competition.

Leah Thornewill was selected as one of four finalists from 113 original entries for the Marks and Spencer Barista of the Year Awards.

To make it to the final in London Miss Thornewill had to create a two-minute video showcasing her latte art skills, and once there she made a ginger beer iced coffee as her signature drink.

She said: “Before working at M&S I didn’t know how versatile and creative coffee could be. Since working at the Winchester store I have had the opportunity to develop a real appreciation of the drink and experiment with both flavours and designs, from original syrup combinations to decorative latte art.

“My favourite design is definitely my swan but our most popular request has to be my children’s hot chocolate, complete with a Percy Pig face!”

Miss Thornewill, who has worked at the store for five years, was nominated by her peers for the award.

Denise Nelson, section manager at M&S Winchester, said: “Leah is a hugely passionate employee and her work is beautiful.

“She was a natural choice to put forward for this award and the entire store has been behind her throughout the award process.

“It is wonderful to have a local girl go so far in a nationally recognised award ceremony and we are proud to be able to nurture her flourishing talent.”

Following the competition the finalists were provided with the opportunity to complete a SCAE Barista Skills Coffee Diploma - which provides guidance on all aspects of the specialty coffee sector.
