WINCHESTER City Council must try to bring back the local branch of Hampshire Credit Union, full Council heard last night.

The Winchester branch closed last month without warning leaving hundreds of customers having to use the internet when many don't have access.

The city council has been unable to contact the Portsmouth-based financial cooperative.

Labour group leader Chris Pines, alerted to the closure by Chronicle enquiries, said: "It is so important to people of limited means especially the elderly. Can I have assurance when officers have got in touch they report back and we try to do something to remediate this problem."

Council leader Rob Humby said he agreed, saying "the move is unfortunate, given the importance of providing access to banking support as the roll-out of Universal Credit continues across the country."
