THE idea of a transport hub where goods destined for businesses in Winchester city centre could be put on to smaller vehicles have been dropped.

Winchester Business Improvement District had been looking into having a base on the edge of the city where lorries could transfer their loads to smaller vehicles thus easing city centre congestion.

Large vehicles unloading in St George’s Street are a major cause of congestion, especially in Friarsgate.

City council chief executive Simon Eden told the overview and scrutiny committee last night: “The hub idea is not feasible.”

The meeting heard that Winchester is too small to make the idea viable.

Mr Eden added: “We have to make sure any restrictions (on lorries) does not impact on local business. It’s about striking a balance.”
