More than 500 techno fanatics queue in WestQuay for new iPhone
9:18am Friday 21st September 2012 in Hampshire Business
Craig Powell who was first in the queue for the new iphone 5
TECHNOLOGY fanatics crammed into Southampton 's WestQuay shopping centre this morning to get their hands on Apple's new iPhone 5 which was released today.
More than 500 gadget lovers were snaked around the shopping centre in long queues desperate to catch a glimpse of the new product.
The first iPhone owners joined the massive queue as early as 4pm yesterday for this morning's much-anticipated 8am launch so some were waiting 16 hours.
Then at 8am the shop shutters were opened and dozens of Apple staff ran around the centre cheering at the crowds to signify the start of business .
First in line Craig Powell, 27, a deputy manager of a care home, from Bognor Regis, said: “I've got everything Apple- iPads, the iPhones and I had to have the latest product. I feel absolutely dead now but it is worth it. I missed out on the iPad 3 because they sold out but I wasn't going to miss out on this.”
Peter Roberts, 25, a stay at home dad, from Locks Heath, was the first one out of the store with the iPhone 5 where he was cheered by the staff and crowds.
Peter, also slept overnight to ensure he was among the first people in the shop. He said: “Finally after 9 hours of waiting. It feels amazing I am going straight to bed when I get home- okay maybe I will make sure the iPhone5 is all charged up first.”
Store manager of Apple in Southampton Dave Lewis said it was the biggest launch in the city yet.
He said: “I have never had so many people turn up for a product launch- it is incredible. There must be over 500 people queuing, the queue is wrapped around on itself now and people are still arriving. We have been going around giving cookies and water, the atmosphere is great. People are really looking forward to seeing the new phone.”
Announced last week the iPhone 5 is thinner and lighter than its predecessor the iPhone 4S and it is powered by a processor which is twice as fast.
Apple has also improved the camera software for the iPhone 5 and has added 4G mobile broadband for the first time.
Earlier this week Apple announced that it had taken two million pre-orders for the iPhone 5 in the first 24 hours after pre-ordering opened.

Seriously, people make this massive deal about "Apple users are sheep" but people who don't like Apple are much more vocal and sheep-like. "I've looked at bits of paper about these two products, and the numbers are bigger on the one that says 'Android' so lol I'm going with that one!" Hmm yes perfectly rational behaviour. Meanwhile, I'm over here having chosen what I want based on usability, and getting on with my life.

If that doesn't interest you, fair enough, but resisting them just because "why would I want to do that with a phone?" is short-changing yourself.
My phone cost £19.99 on pay as you go and it makes calls, sends texts, connects through Bluetooth to the car and has a camera!
Should I upgrade to a £500 phone or have a week away somewhere?
Another side to the debate is that I pay £50 per month for my business mobile (because I get unlimited minutes for this price), so shall I upgrade to an iPhone 5 for no cost, or shall I choose your £19.99 'sends texts and makes calls' jobby?
What is your advice here?
I'd find the GPS function pretty useful on the iPhone, not to mention the Natwest banking app that allows me to send money to my suppliers instantly. Oh, and then there's the fact that it syncs seamlessly with Microsoft Exchange to show me my daily diary and to-do list. And did I mention that i could also use it as a distance tracker for my runs and bike rides?
It's horses for courses my friend. I'd pay for the iPhone5 even if it wasn't free. And why? Because it makes my life 700 times easier.
No it's not.

But so what ? After several years of recession, and the worst summer for 100 years, it's good to see people have still got some spirit in them to get excited about something, even if it is just a luxury phone.
We British are always getting excited about things that don't really matter in the great scheme of things. We want cars, bikes, computers, TV's, guitars, houses, clothes, and a thousand and one other things, all with specifications far greater than we'll ever need. We like to feel we're experts with a nose for quality, even if it is only what the salesman has persuaded us to believe. We're hunters, gatherers, collectors. We love the the quest to possess. We want the Holy Grail, especially if it's on special offer this week only. We'll even queue for days to get an over-priced ticket to see a pop group give the worst performance of their lives, but "I was there!"
People aren't "sad" just because they want something to brighten their day ! Enjoy your phones, and ignore the cynics.

It is true some people really have lost the inner child of excitement when getting something new, Like Christmas for example when you couldn't sleep in anticipation and excitement of the gifts waiting for you under the tree.

Similarly, web developers can't be sure their webapps render properly on all Android devices. The smaller range of iOS devices is a big win in that respect.
Think I'm talking rubbish? I was hired by O2 for a while, to work on this exact problem on their webshop. We had every major handset on the market to play with. Getting something working properly on an iPhone was a doddle. Android was a massive pain, cos what worked ok on one handset would not lay out properly on another. They weren't the worst culprit, though. That honour goes to Blackberry, whose browsers don't work consistently even between slightly older and slightly newer versions of identical handsets. Urgh.

Did I even mention that it was? Also in a different quote I actually refer to the first iphone which was the only model to feature gorilla glass, each model afterwards hasn't featured gorilla glass but as I was saying, because android is open source, it can have bugs fixed through google reading through user feedback reports and are then able to start on a update or patch to fix the bug ASAP whereas the IOS only gets updated with each new handset but to use the new IOS version you have to buy the new handset, on more recent android phones, you can upgrade from the old OS on the same phone to a newer OS version for the specific handset for free.

They weren't the worst culprit, though. That honour goes to Blackberry, whose browsers don't work consistently even between slightly older and slightly newer versions of identical handsets. Urgh.

I watch the lads at work playing with their iphones all day and wasting company time and money...the one thing I've noticed though,is that when it comes to using it as a phone,it's completely sh1t.
What is retina display,is that a fancy term for screen?

Did I even mention that it was? Also in a different quote I actually refer to the first iphone which was the only model to feature gorilla glass, each model afterwards hasn't featured gorilla glass but as I was saying, because android is open source, it can have bugs fixed through google reading through user feedback reports and are then able to start on a update or patch to fix the bug ASAP whereas the IOS only gets updated with each new handset but to use the new IOS version you have to buy the new handset, on more recent android phones, you can upgrade from the old OS on the same phone to a newer OS version for the specific handset for free.
Ginger_cyclist wrote:Open source software has nothing whatsoever to do with "end user feedback", and you know nothing about software development lifecycles beyond what you read in an article aimed at laymen. I have forgotten more about software than you will ever know.

Lame. The iPhone 5 isn't the first iPhone. The biggest clue to this is the number '5'

I don't think the lack of flash is also a problem as well. Plenty of sites apart from YouTube run HTML 5 and it also supports silverlight. Competition is also good so each to their own.

I'm wondering if it actually was Craig who posted last night. If it was it proves the point about the iPhone and conspicuous consumption. "You're jealous" "You wish you had £700 to spend on a phone." It also goes along way to explaining why people choose to queue overnight. You don't get it with people who buy Samsung ect... Also it's normally just the illusion of wealth. The guy works in a care home.
Urgh.
Does this matter? It depends entirely on the individual. That's the bottom line. There's no definitive answer to the iOS vs Android question. It's too complex for there to be any definitive "this is definitely better" answer, just as there's no single answer to "what's the best car in the world?"
Apple excel at usability. Their UX is the envy of the entire tech world. Any time a competing product "wins", it'll be down to something other than usability. Nobody spends as much time making their tech devices as usable as Apple do. That's what wins the smartphone war for me. I choose Apple computers for different reasons, but smartphones and tablets, it's the UX, hands-down. If it other aspects persuade other people to use something else, that's up to them. They're not idiots for it. The idiots are the people who boycott Apple for ridiculous things like working conditions in their factories, or on one single corner aspect, like "Oh, no Flash!", or are swayed by reverse-fanboy arguments.

That makes the retail price an incredible 200% to 300% mark up, sure they have to make a profit but that sort of mark up to sale price is absurd. Anyway, I think I'll root my X8 later to install android 2.3, even though sony claim it won't run it despite the fact that people have proven it can run it.
Ginger_cyclist wrote:Yes it's OS versioning that causes the variation. That's the point. The massive array of choice in the Android world suffers from the problem, precisely because of the huge choice available. Georgem wrote:Oh no, I can believe you about slight handset differences causing problems but it's the difference in OS versions that cause the biggest headache, am I right? So you'll find there are apps that simply don't work on all Android devices, because no app developer has all handsets available to test on.

Not sure where you're getting the figure "99.9%" for Javascript prevalence. It's patently not true. Javascript isn't read by screen readers, either, so if a site owner cares about accessibility - and corporate site owners are technically legally required to - they'll degrade gracefully to a Javascriptless experience.
