12:34pm Tuesday 31st January 2012 in Hampshire Business
By Chris Yandell, Chief Reporter, New Forest
FAST food giant McDonald’s is planning to create almost 180 jobs across Hampshire in a move that aims to cut youth unemployment.
The company wants to build a new drive-thru restaurant at Totton and is also proposing to take on extra staff at many of its existing outlets.
McDonald’s says about 30 per cent of the vacancies will be reserved for young people still struggling to find their first job.
Company bosses are planning to create a total of 2,500 posts across the UK, with more than half going to people under the age of 25.
The massive expansion campaign is good news for Southampton, where the jobless rate has reached 6.6 per cent.
The new restaurant is due to be built on a site that has stood empty since the Red Lion pub in Commercial Road, Totton, burned down in 2010.
The two-storey complex will have seating for 85 customers, plus 41 parking spaces and a drive-thru lane for customers buying takeaways.
McDonald’s says the scheme will create 75 full and part-time jobs.
Managers are also planning to employ another 102 workers at existing outlets, including those in Millbrook, WestQuay, Swaythling and Hedge End.
It comes just days after Sainsbury’s unveiled proposals to build a massive supermarket that will create 230 jobs in Eastleigh.
McDonald’s has already submitted its Totton proposal to New Forest District Council, which is likely to make a decision within weeks. If approved it will open early next year.
The application says: “With the exception of the management team, almost all the staff will be recruited from the local community. There has been an increase in unemployment in the area since 2008 and any jobs and investment locally would make a positive contribution to the social and economic value of the area.”
However, the scheme is set to face opposition from Totton and Eling Town Council.
Councillor David Harrison said the authority would almost certainly urge the district council to reject the application on the grounds that the proposed development was out of keeping with the area.
Councillor Chris Lagdon warned that the site was hidden by a bend in Commercial Road – one of the main Totton-Southampton routes.
He added: “It was dangerous before and a drive-thru restaurant would be much busier than the pub ever was.
There’s going to be a major accident if this goes ahead.”

Any news on Ski Slope, Ice rink, Costo or moving Gunwharf away from Portsmouth so that all those passing cruise passengers actually spend some proper money in this city. Sorry, but southampton is going downhill fast and the town planners just keep getting it wrong!!

Its a nightmare in the dry, and horrific in the wet. Surely the junction just wont take it ! Those people not from the area need to take a look. Try crossing the road there......it takes forever !
Okay, there are a few concerns here.
1. The Red Lion site is on a dangerous, blind bend. It was bad enough when punters were leaving the pub and will only become worse if a busier McDonalds is build on the site.
2. Totton has a McDonalds already. Yes, you have to park and walk, but drive thru's are also at Millbrook and Ower for those who can't be bothered to get out of a car.
3. Employment legislation prevents any employer advertising for "young people". These vacancies will have to be advertised to 76 year olds as much to 16 year olds.

People criticise without knowing what they are criticising!
McDonalds have one of the best Training schemes around and thousands of young people have benefited from this training. With the skills they learn, it can be the bedrock of their future.

These McJobs are not proper ones. They are doubtless very low-paid are will not offer much chance of betterment or of reducing this country's huge debts by exporting what we produce.

will never understand why they closed the one in above bar southampton people used to nip into above bar for their breakfast or lunch and it was always busy who unless they are shopping have the time to go into west quay and wait for ages to get served also they need to inprove their customer service a great deal as the staff across the mcdonalds chain are slow rude and inconsiderate and their customer welfare and and protection of children need to be looked at as many of their outlets are in need of some form of maintenance so instead building new outlets they should try repairing the old ones first

Keep out of it Totton and Eling Council. Southampton desperately needs more McDonalds and minimum wage jobs. If you object to this on the grounds that it's not safe and it will cause people to die then you're standing in the way of progress. We demand Big Macs and McJobs.

The last thing we need are more McDonalds, Subways, Asdas and Tescos selling bad food to a public that no longer knows or cares where food comes from or how to cook it. I know it's kind of inevitable under our form of capitalism that a powerful few will squeeze independents out of the market, but wouldn't it be nice to have a bit of variety in the market or a reason to travel from one town to the next?

Does Totton really need another Mcdonalds, we have one in Asda and then theres the drive through at Ower and the one at Millbrook roundabout in Southampton all within a 5/10 minutes drive of each other.
What we actually need is a drive through Wendys.

Why pick on McDonalds when it comes to the health issues? Surely there's more fat and calories in a good old portion of battered sausage and chips from your local Chippy? Or dare I say it spam fritters and the like! I don't hear anyone crying out for these to be shut down on health issues. I say good for McDonalds, let's give these kids a chance to earn some cash and some respect and gain a feeling of responsibility and that they are wanted.
