McDonald's plans big expansion across Hampshire

FAST food giant McDonald’s is planning to create almost 180 jobs across Hampshire in a move that aims to cut youth unemployment.

The company wants to build a new drive-thru restaurant at Totton and is also proposing to take on extra staff at many of its existing outlets.

McDonald’s says about 30 per cent of the vacancies will be reserved for young people still struggling to find their first job.

Company bosses are planning to create a total of 2,500 posts across the UK, with more than half going to people under the age of 25.

The massive expansion campaign is good news for Southampton, where the jobless rate has reached 6.6 per cent.

The new restaurant is due to be built on a site that has stood empty since the Red Lion pub in Commercial Road, Totton, burned down in 2010.

The two-storey complex will have seating for 85 customers, plus 41 parking spaces and a drive-thru lane for customers buying takeaways.

McDonald’s says the scheme will create 75 full and part-time jobs.

Managers are also planning to employ another 102 workers at existing outlets, including those in Millbrook, WestQuay, Swaythling and Hedge End.

It comes just days after Sainsbury’s unveiled proposals to build a massive supermarket that will create 230 jobs in Eastleigh.

McDonald’s has already submitted its Totton proposal to New Forest District Council, which is likely to make a decision within weeks. If approved it will open early next year.

The application says: “With the exception of the management team, almost all the staff will be recruited from the local community. There has been an increase in unemployment in the area since 2008 and any jobs and investment locally would make a positive contribution to the social and economic value of the area.”

However, the scheme is set to face opposition from Totton and Eling Town Council.

Councillor David Harrison said the authority would almost certainly urge the district council to reject the application on the grounds that the proposed development was out of keeping with the area.

Councillor Chris Lagdon warned that the site was hidden by a bend in Commercial Road – one of the main Totton-Southampton routes.

He added: “It was dangerous before and a drive-thru restaurant would be much busier than the pub ever was.

There’s going to be a major accident if this goes ahead.”

Who cares if it is at McDonalds?
The council may object, but they are cutting jobs not creating them.

Keep out of it Totton and Eling Council. Southampton desperately needs more McDonalds and minimum wage jobs. If you object to this on the grounds that it's not safe and it will cause people to die then you're standing in the way of progress. We demand Big Macs and McJobs.

Does anyone think there might be a connection between that massive McDonalds advert on this website which manages to irritate pretty much everyone who uses it and the completely uncritical nature of this story and the way the council's objections are buried in the last three paragraphs and there are no references to the health dangers of McDonalds? It's kind of embarassing the way local newspapers bend over to the PR industry when it's representing big business.

Makes me laugh when people keep on about how unhealthy McDonalds is! It's there in black and white to read exactly what the content of each meal is, so you know what you're eating. Go there every day and yes it's not good for you, but given the choice of what will be served up to 30,000 fans tonight in and around St Mary's, I know what I'd rather eat.
Besides, if McD is so bad, how come it's ranked 6th global brand in the world?
And no, I don't work there!

Okay, there are a few concerns here.

1. The Red Lion site is on a dangerous, blind bend. It was bad enough when punters were leaving the pub and will only become worse if a busier McDonalds is build on the site.

2. Totton has a McDonalds already. Yes, you have to park and walk, but drive thru's are also at Millbrook and Ower for those who can't be bothered to get out of a car.

3. Employment legislation prevents any employer advertising for "young people". These vacancies will have to be advertised to 76 year olds as much to 16 year olds.

I am not a frequenter of McD's, but I am not against them either. I agree with all of your concerns. I am most concerned about the dangerous bend ! Its a nightmare in the dry, and horrific in the wet. Surely the junction just wont take it ! Those people not from the area need to take a look. Try crossing the road there......it takes forever !

True on the age bit (and indeed on the rest), but realistically nobody over 21 is going to apply are they? I'd rather take out my own appendix without anaesthetic than work in McDs.

I was kind of being ironic. I was doing that thing where I was meaning the opposite of what I was saying. The last thing we need are more McDonalds, Subways, Asdas and Tescos selling bad food to a public that no longer knows or cares where food comes from or how to cook it. I know it's kind of inevitable under our form of capitalism that a powerful few will squeeze independents out of the market, but wouldn't it be nice to have a bit of variety in the market or a reason to travel from one town to the next?

Leonardo DiCaprio of all people called it a service station culture that takes the needs of a fat, white American and reproduces them around the globe. And with the banks not lending to any newcomers who might provide an alternative it's hard to see it stopping any time soon.

You're wrong there. A chippy tea is less calorific than a Big Mac meal. And it has the advantage of actually filling you up, which is part of the problem with McDonalds - people eat there and ten minutes later they're hungry again.

People are getting excited on here, the whole point is that whether its a Mc D or a Burger King or anything else for that matter, everything in moderation i like a Big Mac i prefer a Burger King but that is my choice it is also my choice to have one occasionally not live on them. We live in a different world nowadays and those of the older generation have to accept that. You only have to look at the range of so called ready meals on offer in the supermarket to see how things have changed, many young women don't know what to buy or how to cook it. A job in McDonalds might not be what a lot of youngsters aspire too but a job is a job and if i were an employer i would sooner employ somebody who has made some effort in life rather than sat on their backside waiting for their dream job.
