Ineos threatens to move headquarters out of Britain

INEOS, one of Hampshire’s biggest companies, is preparing to move its headquarters out of the county and overseas in a bid to save on tax bills.

The implications for its Lyndhurst headquarters are today unclear, although the company said its day-to-day operations both in the UK and elsewhere around the world would remain unaffected.

As Britain’s largest private company, it would be a major blow for UK PLC if Ineos followed through with its threat to move to Switzerland. Ineos is largely owned by new Forest based billionaire Jim Ratcliffe, one of the UK’s richest men.

Here we go! it will be a 'one up manship'. Its happening all over Britain - If the Banks can do it then why not all other private companies who threaten to go abroad. In fact I see governing bodies digging a deep hole for themselves and pass the mess to the next Government. Both Conservative and Labour have dug deeper and deeper and now they are cornered. Everything from motor industry, boat building even land being sold down the line. Even the Docks, don't you think there is a lot of double talking behind the scene before they graciously agree to use the Solent. Those estimates given for building never stays within the final estimate, also the promise of 1,000's of jobs - its only for the time to build and then they are thrown on the scrap heap. Look at the Bus service - I larff when I read they are sending their staff to teach them politeness and courtesy. It's only a game, and I am getting worried at how we are running Britain.

and where will the Government recoup the lost taxes from this company, and the others moving abroad.
The workers of course, who will have to pay more and more, in terms of direct, indirect and stealth taxes.
Far better to reduce the tax % and keep the business here, than to lose out altogether.

Ineos are running a business-not providing a perpetual pot of gold for the Benefits system

Lyndhurst operations remain unchanged.....
Don't panic, they are just going to move their registered HQ out of the country so they pay less tax.
Shame that they will no longer be classed as a UK company, but we all know there are too many punitive measures in this country that prevent businesses profiting.

They ought to show Ineos who's in charge by getting a job somewhere else!

We know what a success that was!...oh wait....streets filled with garbage and corpses left unburied...Southy's socialist utopia come true.....Bravo!

I think you'll find that Planning Permission has been granted as requested. All dutifully reported in the Lymington Times.

I take it that you won't be taking a pay rise if offered? Come on! People running businesses are no different from the rest of us; we want to paid more if we can.

As I commented when the Echo ran the Planning permission story: this company will go bankrupt as they have bitten off more than they can chew (Ratcliffe). Ineos is purely a cobbled together mess of unwanted chemical companies....watch this space

Idiot

Provide detailed evidence that the Tax rate was 95% in the 70s??

Why have business also moved abroad during the Tory Government of 1981-97, Dyson is one that springs to mind.

Stop reading the millionaire, Tory owned press for anti union propoganda.
The deregulated during Tory times, banks did more damage to the country than the unions ever did.

I say again, idiot!!

Dyson shifted production to Malaysia in 2002 because wages were substantially lower than they were in his Wiltshire plant. Who was in power in 2002?

We all know the punitive tax regime under the Wilson and Callaghan governments lead to the infamous 'brain drains'.

You really need to show more respect to other contributors. There really is no need for personal insults, this is a democratic forum for all comers.

Ask Denis Healey why he introduced it.

A quick check on the Internet where facts can't hide shows that Mr Healey's top tax rates were 98% on unearned income and a mere 83% on earned income which must have been a powerful incentive to avoid tax by leaving this country. Come to think of it, people did and it was called the Brain Drain. Pass me the Foot and I'll shoot it
