ONE of Winchester's longest-standing fashion stores is set to close in four days' time.

River Island has been a mainstay of the High Street for more than 20 years, but the chain has decided not to renew its lease.

It will be seen as a blow to the city's clothing retail offer, with many remaining shops in the city centre serving an older demographic.

High street fashion was a key part of the retail expansion planned for the regeneration of Silver Hill. Brands including H&M, Topshop, Gap and Dorothy Perkins have previously expressed an interest in the scheme.

River Island manager Lucy Mortimer said staff were informed of the decision three weeks ago but were not given a reason.

River Island has yet to respond to a request for comment.
