BUILDERS, plasterers and roofers have been treated to a special event for local jobseekers.

Winchester City Council’s skills taster session was held to raise awareness of entry-level employment opportunities for tradesmen.

Potential construction workers met with prospective employers at the event in Stanmore and learned about apprentice opportunities.

Eloise Appleby, assistant director for economy and communities, said: “School leavers or those changing careers may not automatically think of a career in construction. There are many advantages such as being able to work your way up, with training provided on the job in many cases, and not necessarily needing any previous experience or qualifications. It is also a very varied sector, with jobs ranging from specialist conservation roles to the more traditional ‘brickie’.

“With 12,500 new homes set to be delivered across the Winchester district over the next 15 years, this is a sector which will continue to thrive.”

The Business Collective was commissioned to co-ordinate the event after running something similar for the hospitality and catering sector earlier this year.

Cllr Robert Humby, leader of Winchester City Council, said: “This was a great event and I really enjoyed talking to local people who were interested in pursuing a new career in construction. It was interesting to meet Daniel McClane from Colden Common who is looking for a career as a labourer. “I hope that some of those I have met today will go on to find jobs or training which will lead them to a satisfying future in employment.”
