AS a new vintage-themed Winchester store opened its doors consumers flocked in.

Every piece of refurbished bric-a-brac, furniture and fashion, from costume jewellery to collectible toy cars, adorned the shelves at the newly opened former warehouse on Moorside Road.

And it wasn’t just the bargain hunters who were having a good time.

The children’s outdoor play area saw tots swinging to their every delight, despite the intermittent showers.

Not a corner was left bare and once-loved possessions, of all shapes and sizes, filled every part of the polkadot-clad treasure trove.

The owner, Dean Souter, said the growing demand for “vintage” items has seen his business expand at every point. The Winchester unit is his third den to be opened, following the success of Bournemouth and New Milton, and features an outdoor refitted shipping container – one of 50 to be leased by businesses when they are later completed – two large open areas full of second-hand bits and pieces, and an upstairs cafe with live entertainment.

He hopes to launch “vintage” themed fashion shows and music events at a later date.

“I couldn't be more delighted with the launch at Winchester which was attended by Cllr Eileen Berry who purchased a few vintage items of her own,” Mr Souter said. “The public have really embraced the theme so I have high hopes for the future of the huge Winchester Den.”

Cllr Eileen Berry, Mayor of Winchester, said she was delighted with the new store and had eyed up a couple of items for herself.

“I think it’s absolutely fabulous,” she said. “For me this is fantastic. I do know that people are going back and trying to find the older vintage stuff. It’s in and it is history repeating itself and if this will do as its portraying today it won’t be anything but successful.

“I think this has been done in the right way and Winchester will come in their droves. They have catered for anyone and everyone, including children, and it seems to be working.”
