IN a bid to find talented young apprentices, Amey is to hold a open day event at the Holiday Inn Basingstoke Hotel this Wednesday.

For the fourth year in a row, the company that works with Hampshire County Council to maintain and improve the county’s 9,000 kilometre network of roads, is recruiting apprentices to join its highways team.

This year it is aiming to recruit eight new apprentices aged between 18-25 years old.

This recruitment drive is part of the company’s national Amey Apprenticeship Scheme, which last year employed 190 apprentices nationwide.

David Ogden, Amey account director in Hampshire said: “Every year I’m impressed all over again by the commitment and enthusiasm of the apprentices we take on. “This year we’ve had eight young people transition from being apprentices into permanent roles with Amey in Hampshire, and we’re looking forward to taking on another eight apprentices to maintain the cycle of young talent coming into the business.”

The open day at the hotel in Grove Road, starts at 3pm, although applicants should arrive at 2.30pm for registration.

It will include presentations about the scheme and give attendees the opportunity to ask questions and find out more.

All attendees should bring an up-to-date CV to the event.

One of the apprentices recruited to Amey last year was 20-year-old Tom Stokes from Basingstoke, who said “I was at college and working part-time in a shop when I applied for the Amey apprenticeship. “It just looked like a good opportunity and I haven’t been disappointed. “I really appreciate the work experience and learning opportunities it’s provided, and hope to stay with the company once I complete the programme next year. I’d definitely recommend it.”

The Amey apprenticeship incorporates the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme which means the apprentices get personal development alongside skills and qualifications.

Unlike many apprenticeship schemes, Amey apprentices have guaranteed jobs if they complete the 18-month scheme successfully. The eight Hampshire posts will be based at the company’s local depots in Hook, Micheldever, Bishops Waltham, Petersfield, and Totton. Successful applicants will complete a structured career and self-development programme. This will include studying towards recognised professional qualifications including NVQs, completing work placements and on-the-job training and achieving the Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.
