Hundreds of companies to be surveyed over Itchen Riverside regeneration scheme

Hampshire Chronicle: Business views sought on regeneration scheme Business views sought on regeneration scheme

CIVIC chiefs are set to make the first step in regenerating a key Southampton site.

Businesses in the Itchen Riverside area of the city will be surveyed to help shape plans for the area.

The site on the western bank of the river is one of seven key sites which council bosses want to see regenerated over the next 20 years.

Their City Centre Master Plan also features approved plans for the city centre Arts Complex and bars, restaurants, retail and public space at West Quay Watermark.

It also features proposals for the long-awaited Royal Pier leisure, retail and housing development and a new Fruit and Vegetable Market Quarter.

As previously reported by the Daily Echo the Town Depot site at the southern end of the riverside is already being offered to developers as an opportunity for housing, leisure, recreation and maritime employment uses.

Now, to shape plans for the riverside the city council will talk to 550 businesses based in and around the area.

Information gathered over the course of the survey will be used to inform future decisions on what will go on the site.

The survey will be carried out by Toby Warren, an economic development specialist with local knowledge, on behalf of the council.

The survey runs until March 21.

Labour council leader Simon Letts said: “I’d like to assure resident and businesses in the Itchen area that we will be carefully considering their needs when preparing our plans for the regeneration of the area. “We are already marketing the former Town Depot site and working with other landowners in the area to consider opportunities as well as improved infrastructure and flood defences. There will also be consultation with stakeholders once initial plans are drafted.

“I hope that in the long term the sites in this area can be brought forward for new marine business uses, whilst continuing to support existing businesses, and to provide good quality housing and improved access to the riverside, as identified within the City Centre Master Plan. Economy “Development of this area and the creation of a new neighbourhood here, will greatly improve the offer that Southampton currently provides, while extending our economic potential and enhancing our status as a centre for marine excellence in the UK and internationally.” Businesses can complete the survey online at southampton.gov.uk/itchenriversidebusinesssurvey. For other information on the survey email city.plan@southampton.gov.uk or call 023 8083 4459.

Why can't we have something different? We've got cinema's coming out of our ears, casino's, housing. What about an ice rink? We used to have a great Ice Hockey team, its another form of sport to get involved with and it would be open for all to enjoy instead of going to Basingstoke or Pompey way. All we have in this flaming city is shops, casinos and stuff for the students. Can't we be a bit different and put out city on the map for a change?

from what I have heard. the snow done wasn't viable because the land proposed is contaminated and the cost dont stack up. the biggest problem in Southampton is that when ever you try and do something bold and different , you encounter show much bureaucracy. To many survey's and tick boxes. The council need set an enviroment for creative people and be brave you that they might make a few mistakes. this is why Manchester has overtaken Birmingham as the second city. there is so much happening in Manchester

This doesn't say waterside leisure it says leisure facilities so that could just be Restaurants couldn't it?
Or don't you count restaurants & eating out as leisure?
you say the Snow Dome is still possible? only if your on the council & are involved in this development can you say that other wise it's not going to happen so why say it?

The first poster is absolutely right. Why the fudging heck can we not have something a little different? Southampton is now getting to the stage, if it isn't already where literally the only thing to do is eat out, shop, sit on your backside watching movies whilst eating highly overpriced popcorn, and get drunk. None of this encourages us to be more active and to help combat the ongoing obesity issue. Snow Dome/Ice Rink would be an amazing addition as it would give us something that not many other towns and cities have and would attract people in from afar. We also need a distinct landmark so that when cruise passengers sail into port, they immediately know that they are in Southampton. But as the City Council saying goes, You can have anything you like, as long as it's flats.

I'm in the process of leaving Southampton so I couldn't give a **** what this idiot Lone Ranger thinks of me.
I care very passionately for my City & it's people & that is all it's peoples building flats after flats with no recreational facilities is a huge mistake & here at the Town Depot there was a chance to build a great facility which a Labour leader & his party scrapped.
Now if the resident councillor wants to attack me for dare attacking this Labour council fine but let that person say exactly who they are so the electorate can see who they're voting for.
with a council & councillors like this I feel sorry for this great city & it's peoples but insults after insults from a person who's suppose to represent the people of this city shows just how bad this city is being lead by a Labour council so hopefully I won't be here to see the demise of the city I love

I've just had the Tory candidates leaflet for Swaythling shoved through my letter box, and on it he complains of the lack of spending by the Labour administration on youth facilities in Swaythling. He of course is standing for the party that sold off the Swaythling Youth Centre to a French firm to build student halls of residence and sold off the Flower Roads Community Centre, extensively used by local children and youths, for housing. I personally will never trust a Tory again, and I used to vote Tory at a time when they actually represented us people.

Al I agree in a community centre if used right but I know what the teenagers did in Randolph street & the reasons the then Labour council shut the youth club.
I don't know if swaythling had the same problems but your saying it became student flats/accommodation
Would you rather 10-20+ houses were either bulldozed or taken other as HMO's as in Polygon or some areas of Portswood or those homes remain family homes & you lose a community centre?
You say it was well used? that's what's usually said when a pub shuts through lack of customers?

The excuse used to sell off the youth centre was that it was not well used, partly true as all the little darlings used the Aster Road Community Centre. Ther was never any trouble there, but it was sold off as it would cost about £50,000 to put right. That was pesnuts compared to what they got from selling off the Youth Centre, the Area Housing Office and Swaythling car park for the student accommodation. And I do believe that more halls of residence shpould be built, they could start by building on campus where there is sufficient space, and they could renovate the halls down near Mansbridge that have been empty for years.

I'll openly admit I don't know why this facility was closed & if I had been given a seat to stand for & won I'd have done my utmost to find out & if it was finance I'd have tried to get local companies involved in funding it & then tried to get activities & clubs ran from it.
I would have attempted to get Rowing clubs Cycling & all type of sports to go there & offer the young a way to enjoy themselves as that is what I said I'd do no matter what ward I would have represented but it never happened.
I'm happy you agree more Student facilities should be built rather than losing family homes to HMO's.
We might not (don't) see eye to eye on many matters but good luck & watch the debate next week

Ther was never any trouble there, but it was sold off as it would cost about £50,000 to put right. That was pesnuts compared to what they got from selling off the Youth Centre, the Area Housing Office and Swaythling car park for the student accommodation. And I do believe that more halls of residence shpould be built, they could start by building on campus where there is sufficient space, and they could renovate the halls down near Mansbridge that have been empty for years.[/p][/quote]I'll openly admit I don't know why this facility was closed & if I had been given a seat to stand for & won I'd have done my utmost to find out & if it was finance I'd have tried to get local companies involved in funding it & then tried to get activities & clubs ran from it. We might not (don't) see eye to eye on many matters but good luck & watch the debate next week loosehead
