JAMIE Oliver's Union Jacks restaurant in Hampshire has closed its doors for the last time.

The pizzeria, High Street, in Winchester, which served toppings such as pork crackling, closed over the weekend.

Signage outside has been removed, and a notice was placed in the window.

The news confirms the reports in the Daily Echo last autumn that the restaurant on the High Street was set to close. It was denied at the time.

The notice reads: “The Jamie Oliver group has decided to close its Unions Jacks restaurants in Chiswick, Holborn and Winchester.

“After a full review it was concluded that these businesses were no longer sustainable in the current challenging climate. All our amazing staff have been fully consulted and we very much hope that we can transfer them to other restaurants within the group.

“We would like to thank all of our fantastic customers for their support, and apologise if we have caused you any inconvenience today.

“Union Jacks in the Piazza in Covent Garden, London, remains fully operational and we would love to welcome you there.”

A spokesman for Oliver said: ''The Jamie Oliver Restaurant Group has made the decision to close three of the Union Jacks restaurants.

''After a full review it was concluded that the businesses in Winchester, Chiswick and Holborn were no longer sustainable in the current challenging climate. The Union Jacks site in the Piazza in Covent Garden is trading well and will remain fully operational.

''The group is confident in being able to deliver a robust performance in 2014 and is looking forward to a number of restaurant openings, in the UK and internationally. This will include developing the successful Trattoria model which is doing well in its first location in Richmond.''
