La Margherita in Southampton plunges into liquidation
4:00am Thursday 21st March 2013 in Hampshire Business
By Luke Tugby, Senior reporter
La Margherita, Southampton
IT IS recognised as one of Southampton’s most famous restaurants.
Over the past 40 years, La Margherita has built up a reputation as one of the city’s finest eateries, serving up Italian delicacies to A-list stars including Dame Shirley Bassey, The Two Ronnies and Billy Connolly.
But now the popular Town Quay restaurant has been placed into liquidation, the Daily Echo can reveal.
Documents seen by this newspaper show that restaurateur Nikos Raftopoulos has turned to Fareham-based business recovery specialists Portland Business and Financial Solutions to help find a buyer.
Liquidators Mike Field and Carl Faulds said that negotiations were under way with a prospective purchaser in a bid to save the venue, which remains open for business.
The revelation will come as a shock to regular diners at the restaurant, which has become synonymous with Southampton.
La Margherita opened for the first time in 1973, under the original name of the Cabin Crew cafe, in Commercial Road.
Franco Fantini, a former cruise ship worker, set up the business and Southampton quickly became his home.
It started with just a handful of tables, but the cafe’s reputation grew so rapidly that long queues began to form outside.
As the restaurant became more popular, its name was changed to La Margherita and Franco expanded into the premises next door.
With its location just a stone’s throw from the Mayflower theatre, the restaurant was a firm favourite for pre-theatre dinner or after-show suppers – even for stars like Dame Shirley.
And its standing as an institution in the city was cemented when “Let’s go Margher-eating”
became a popular phrase among residents.
The restaurant moved to Town Quay in 1998 when the area at the top of Commercial Road was earmarked for development.
But it continued to draw big names, with the likes of model Calum Best and boy band JLS appearing in recent years.
Franco died in January 2009, aged 71, leaving the restaurant in the hands of business partner Mr Raftopoulos.
When asked to comment Mr Raftopoulos declined to speak.

Despite not being my cup of tea, every time I have been their (to pick up my son as its very popular for teen parties), the place has been absolutely heaving and you have to fight your way past the stand up boozers just to get to the crowded tables!

If the comments are true and that they are always busy (even with teenagers, slappers, parties etc etc)... why is it going into liquidation?

I would suggest to you that the two chefs you mentioned do not pretend to be Italian, in fact they cook a diverse range of foods in their establishments not just occasional Italian dishes. As opposed to La Margherita which markets itself as a traditional Italian trattoria or ristorante.

TO THE PERSON MAKING COMMENTS ABOUT POLISH CHEFS! The staff are all Greek or Italian. If any are polish, so what? They are people just like the rest of us, who would not be working for Nickos if not to standard. As long as you get what you pay for and you do, that is all that matters. Keep those sort of a opinions to yourself!
For me it's a real shame for sure and La Margherita's will be sadly missed. I have been going there for 12 years and have many incredible memories. Being able to dance until 3am to Latin & a mixture of music, having my birthday celebrations and romantic meals for two. The staff are super lovely, some have worked there since the beginning.
Amazing music, amazing atmosphere and the food is divine! Like all bars and restaurants, of course you are always going to get drunken idiots that give the wrong message to new comers. Overall it's the only bar I prefer to go to for a good place to dance, and eat...a night out is what you make it too! I hope Nickos and the guys can turn this around. I love the Latin feel on the Marina.
When I want to book a table they always gave me the best, free champs because it's your birthday or special occasion. This year, Valentines day was amazing. The food and Service as always 5*.
My worry is with the new strip club coming soon next door, god knows what other business La Margherita's vacancy may attract!
The only place for me to go....and now it will be gone :-(. Very Sad!

If it's not your thing the fair enough..but other people have different preferences to what they like on a night out. So don't condemn the Business.

Therefore, liquidate the old company and screw the suppliers.
Set up a new company, who buys the old company's assets for a nominal fee (£1) and they can start trading.
But, all that's at a guess.

Whilst broad businesses (eg department stores, supermarkets) do better by being located away from competitors, speciality businesses (eg camera shops, restaurants) do better by being clustered together.

But... IIRC, things like multiscreen cinemas, sports centres etc need to be spread apart despite being 'speciality', because the critical mass of custom they need to make a go of it is so large.
.
I guess it's be different with small independent single-screen cinemas, and they'd probably profit from being clustered.

However, because of the proximity of houses to the TMNP, often fires that would be beneficial to the vegetation are extinguished because of the threat to human settlement. If fynbos does not burn in about 20 - 30 years it will become moribund which could result in the extinction of some species.

Thank you sarfhamton. I am glad to hear it! Long Live Marg's! How do you know?
So what is this news story all about then? What is the truth behind it all? People think that La Margherita's will be gone, and for good!? Daily Echo and the news papers need to be informed to ensure that the correct facts are being published?
Mrs Justice/E.H
Therefore, liquidate the old company and screw the suppliers.
Set up a new company, who buys the old company's assets for a nominal fee (£1) and they can start trading.
But, all that's at a guess.
Maybe they're playing ping pong, goes bust, next one takes over, go bust next one takes over, I'm just over imaginative I guess!

I remember countless times when La Margherita's held huge Charity events to raise money. Since Franco died the family have obviously tried their best to expand their businesses in a very tough financial climate. In life you have to take risks. The staff, who are people by the way, all probably work harder then you ever have in your life. Some of the staff work day and night!

What does it mean to be “from” some place? How can the place we are from influence our identities (who we are)?
Is it possible to be from more than one place? How might our identity change depending on where we are?
Can people be from a “place” that is not an actual location, but represents a community or an idea – such as being from a family, a religious tradition or a strong interests?
i thought its a margherita the restaurant we are talking about it....

69loulalove - Excellent choice, again! I for one will be booking another meal for next week. Maybe those who are quick to judge should do the same. I highly recommend all dishes on the menu, amazing cocktails and fabulous service...:-)
Those who love La Margherita....book yourself a night there soon! Let's get the party started!
All those that seem to like to offend people..get angry?? Is there really any need? ...Good luck with that attitude kind of attitude in life. !

Yes I had read this information. If Nikos and family are no longer running La Margherita's, then it will not be the same. I just hope who ever buys the property will continue it's tradition and keep the staff who exist a present. We shall wait and see....
This town has gone to the dogs and establishments like this play a large part in the binge drinking moron culture.
I'm all for a drink and enjoying yourself but this place conjures up a special sub-class of loose women & equally brainless letches pursuing them and looking at the venue on a weekend, the way the customers are treated and place managed, it is abundantly clear.
It's always pretty busy so for this to happen may be either gross incompetency or convenient accounting. Who knows. Town Quay still charge a lot of rent under the presumption it is some salubrious, Monaco esque principality! Bizarre mindset!
One thing is for sure though, this place never had class and won't be missed by anyone with taste (more referring to the overall venue rather than restaurant as it is a club really).

Not quite sure why you think that. Personally I'd say it's doing pretty well for itself. Some great acts are coming our way as the city's Civic Centre entertainment venue continues to attract ever-growing crowds from far and wide. The new Sea City museum isn't half bad and neither's the shopping experience. Overall I'd say it's better than ever - I've lived here 30 years.
Of course, certain parts have seen better days but that's called 'a sign of the times'.
On another note, you call Margs a place that 'never had class and won't be missed', yet your previous comment suggests that you got thrown out - which says a lot about you really doesn't it.
The venue itself has seen better days however, and I still think there's a load of good opportunities to make Town Quay into a premiere destination.

I have been to all those cities you mention on a night out. I agree, I have had amazing times out too, but just as I have always done so at La Margherita's. I will always still enjoy the best nights out at La Margs. They play best music, and are in the best location. The night out is what you make of it. It also depends on the company you keep. Every club and bar offer different styles. If this is not for you, then thats your preference, not of everyone! As I mentioned previously, we are always going find some types of people that do not appeal to us. This is the same for all bars and restaurants. The only place in town that will stay open until 3am. No bar in Portsmouth has the license to do the same!
Why are you comparing us to other cities? Southampton can't change. It is what it is. Like anything else in life, we have to make the most of what we have.
If you have had enough of Southampton night life then just keep going to the other places you enjoy, don't mock a place that myself and I know many others enjoy going to. it's packed there most of the time...does that not tell you anything?

Even Portsmouth has more on offer!

If your sister and others were more careful to look after their possessions! Oh and don't think I don't condemn this awful crime but the only reason why they chose La Margs is because it is easy pickings being that it is so packed and popular. They will be trying somewhere else next week! If you owned a bar and it was packed with foreigners...which is a highly offensive statement, would you chuck them out?, or would you be happy to take their money to pay the bills considering the extremely expensive lease!!!???.
My sister was in there Saturday night. It was full of foreigners and she had her brand new phone nicked out of her handbag as did a few other people. I would stay away!!
Maybe if you call Kostas on the number provided above he may be able to do something about it to prevent this people from entering his club again?? Knowing Kostas he will try his best to make sure this does not happen again. ??
I just also want to ask....have you been there before and has this happened before? You see the reason for my question is that for the last 12-13 years I have gone to La Margherita's, tis has never happened to me.
Hope your sister has insurance, and call Kostas to warn him.

if he does that & says he saw nothing what harm would it do to let the lady see for herself ? there is no written law saying she can't.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I just if the people who are quick to write bad comments above, ever visited La Margherita enough to be able to give fair Critic! If it's not your thing the fair enough..but other people have different preferences to what they like on a night out. So don't condemn the Business.
Very Sad!
As many have said the place was a sleazepit. Went there a few times for various 'dos' and charity things, always thought that the food was average, and there were far too many people in there and it was a fire risk and def not my cuppa.
