Crummock Estates submits planning application for Brunswick House in Southampton
4:00am Tuesday 12th March 2013 in Hampshire Business
Vision for Brunswick House in Southampton
IT is one of the most prominent buildings on Southampton’s skyline.
And if council chiefs approve plans to redevelop the 12-storey Brunswick House tower in May, it could become a ‘landmark’ £7.7million redevelopment featuring 156 student flats.
Crummock Estates has handed in a planning application to do the work, and council bosses will run the rule over the plans before reaching a final decision, which is expected by May 14.
The site in Brunswick Place is largely empty at the moment, and in recent years has been marketed as office accommodation.
As previously reported, if the application is successful the site would contain high-quality flats with their own en-suite facilities.
It would also have retail units and a launderette on the ground floor, while the external appearance of the tower would also be changed.
The developer is aiming to create a different feel to normal halls of residence, with the new flats aimed at postgraduate, mature, international or final year medical students.
Consultation has been carried out with local residents groups and neighbouring businesses, with an exhibition held at the site earlier this year.
Following feedback from the event, designers amended the external appearance of the tower.
Peter Disley, development manager of Praxis, which is advising Crummock Estates, said: “This scheme is looking to set a new benchmark for student accommodation, delivering something new and different as well as providing far ranging economic benefits both in the construction and occupation phases.
“As this is such a landmark building many people, including civic groups, residents and local authorities felt strongly about the external appearance and these comments have fed directly into the final design of the building.
“We are confident that that our proposals will provide high-quality accommodation for the thriving student community of Southampton.”

Well it's cheap and ugly so the planners will welcome it with open arms!
Love how the Echo and council big up such lame aberrations to the city and try and generate excitement. It's like the proverbial polishing of a t*rd!

I have lived here all of my life and do not particulary share your opinion of what i consider to be my City.

Now i possibly dont judge the city on pubs and clubs as they are of no great interest ....... Perhaps you do ... I dont know.

However, unless you are held up in a small dark dinghy cellar, or locked in someones spare room or indeed incaserated ......... please feel free to leave if you dont like it.
.
I have noticed on previous posts that you may not come from Southampton but may be work, or attend Uni or whatever ....... I would be so interested to know what wonderous town, city or village that you left ....... What was there .... the hanging gardens of Babylon.

The only thing Portsmouth has going for it is that it is marginally less of a **** hole than Southampton.
