Liverpool to see a 25 per cent rise in cruise ship business
Southampton's cruise rival Liverpool is set to see business soar by 25 per cent over the next 12 months compared with last year.
Thomson Cruises will also start operating turnaround – starting and ending – journeys from Liverpool cruise terminal this year.
It will be the third cruise line to do so, joining Fred Olsen Cruise Lines, which returns to Liverpool after a two-year gap with 11 turnaround trips, and Cruise & Maritime Voyages, which restarted turnaround sailings from the Pier Head last year.
Experts say that, with cruise programmes planned years in advance, other lines will be considering Liverpool. Chris Brown, Liverpool’s new head of marketing, said: “The news that Thomson Cruises will be running turnaround cruises next year is absolutely brilliant.
“Some 46,000 cruise passengers in total passed through Liverpool cruise terminal on liners last year.
“That means, within about ten years, the figure has risen from about 1,200 passengers travelling from the old Langton Dock terminal, in Bootle.”
The highlight of the new season for Liverpool cruise terminal will be the return of Southampton-based Cunard flagship Queen Mary 2 which will berth on May 17 as part of a round-UK Britain cruise.
Celebrity Cruises’ Celebrity Infinity will be a first time visitor to the Merseyside port.

It makes business sense that cunard use liverpool again and why not too.
Liverpool has worked hard to get this far and truly deserve the liners back where they belong

This is disgusting - particularly when you consider all the hard work Chris Huhne has done to represent the values of the south.

I would prefer to instead refer to Southampton as a city with a rich and vibrant maritime history and tradition. Our Victorian Parks are hugely attractive, there are lots of places to visit in the vicinity and we have one of the biggest container ports in England.
Liverpool has received very generous subsidies and lots of national/internation
al funding to regenerate and grow the city from what was a complete dive in the 90s to a beautiful and vibrant modern city.
Southampton has not been that lucky and is perhaps 15 years behind Liverpool in its regeneration plans.
(And before anyone asks me - I have lived in both cities and am not fiercely loyal to either!)

Everyone in the USA knows Liverpool, it is the only, 'other', UK city that is very widely known.
Cunard and other transport operators are missing a very big trick by not using it on a more regular basis.
Not only Brits for outbound travel, Americans and other nationalities for inbound too.

I see a great many discounted cruises from Southampton.
Sailing from Liverpool saves the tiresome journey, and cost, to and from Southampton and opens up the market to all those wannabe cruiser's who will not, or cannot make that horrible journey.
The agent said he could have booked people on to New York when QM2 returns to Liverpool, but QM2 had a mini cruise booked already.
Cunard should test the water with a Southampton-Liverpoo
l-New York trip.
I predict the 1500 berths from Liverpool would sell quickly and for full price.
