Two businessmen charged with £1m VAT fraud

Two Hampshire businessmen have been charged with VAT fraud estimated at £1 million.

Mukesh Patel, 54, and Harishchandra Desai, 60, were charged with two counts of cheating the Revenue out of Value Added Tax while running three take-away food businesses.

Patel, of Bassett Green Road, Southampton, and Desai, of Pylewell Road, Hythe, were charged following an investigation by HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC).

The pair were arrested earlier this year on suspicion of cheating the revenue and money laundering.

Both men have been released on unconditional bail to appear at Southampton Magistrates’ Court on November 16.
