Tosca’s, Commercial Road, Southampton
THIS is a firm favourite of mine which has recently undergone a dramatic facelift.
Tosca’s, Commercial Road, Southampton
I once spent a memorable evening staring across the room at Ant and Dec as they shared a pizza with old pal and star of Grease Johnathan Wilkes in the old, more intimate Tosca’s.
If the Geordie duo were to return to the restaurant, which has seen its fair share of celebrity clientele with its enviable spot close to The Mayflower, they wouldn’t even recognise it.
Tosca’s has doubled in size and had a glamorous makeover which sleek new furniture and decor. But the fantastic food, friendly service and welcoming feel remains.
A friend and I visited one Friday night just as the show had got under way nextdoor. I recommend this as a time to dine as the hordes of theatre-goers have departed and you have the team of attentive staff if not to yourself, shared among a jolly band of early evening diners having a great time.
We sipped a glass of chilled Pinot Grigio as we perused the menu, which includes plenty of new dishes as well as all the old Tosca’s favourites.
Dithering as usual, I asked our waiter to recommend a starter and I’m so glad I did. My scallops accompanied with asparagus, vinegar drizzle and topped with parmesan were truly mouth-watering.
My friend enjoyed her mussels in a tomato and chilli sauce to start, but saved her biggest compliments for a delicious risotto with hearty portions of crab and crayfish.
We shared an Italian salad of rocket, tomato, peppers and olives, the perfect accompaniment to my cheese lovers delight – a Quattro Formaggio pizza overflowing with mountains of the stuff. It was marvellous. For dessert, we shared a delightful strawberry and raspberry cheesecake direct from a display cabinet filled with the most mouth-watering of homemade desserts.
At the all new Tosca’s, size does matter. The expansion into the premises nextdoor means even more diners can now enjoy one of their fabulous feasts.
