A MAJOR council scheme for scores of new homes and flats in a Winchester estate will be decided this week.

Winchester City Council want to build 76 council homes at The Valley in Stanmore.

The scheme which is recommended for approval has had some opposition to it with more than 20 letters of objection and some councillors have previously questioned whether the plans are "value for money".

The plans consist 62 flats and 14 homes, of which 30 are one-bedroom flats, 29 are two-bedroom flats, 11 two-bedroom homes, two three-bedroom homes and two three-bedroom shared homes for people under the age of 35.

Within the scheme there is also wheelchair friendly bungalow, and a three-bedroom wheelchair friendly home.

City councillor Ian Tait has previously said that he fears that what is being built is not family homes, which he has been calling for the council to build, and councillor Eileen Berry also raised concerns that the homes are not big enough for families.

The plans form part of Winchester City Council's strategy to provide 4000 new homes by 2031.

So far there have been 21 letters of objection, those opposing the plans say The Valley is home to endangered and protected species like slow worms, bats and newts, busy roads will be made worse and children use the area that will be built on for play.

Winchester City Council will make a decision on the scheme at the next planning committee meeting on July 27.
