A MURDER investigation has been launched into the death of a five-year-old boy in a car fire.

Tommy Sheldon, from Southampton, died in hospital yesterday after a two week battle with life threatening injuries suffered in the blaze in Hursley, near Winchester.

His mother and sister, also injured in the fire in Merdon Castle Lane, continue to receive hospital treatment.

Detective Inspector Simon Baker, from the Hampshire Major Investigation Team, said: “Despite Tommy’s battle to survive his injuries, sadly he has lost his fight for life.

“This tragic news means that our investigation now becomes a murder enquiry.

“Our thoughts are with the family and friends of those who have been affected by this distressing incident and specially trained officers are continuing to support them at this difficult time.

“The nature of the injuries suffered by all those involved and the need to ensure their health and recovery takes priority, means that this will be a lengthy investigation spanning many weeks.

“We would ask people to respect the family’s privacy at this very difficult time.”

A post mortem will be held in due course to establish the exact cause of death.

No arrests have been made and the cause of the fire, which occurred on Monday, August 11, is still being investigated.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the Hampshire Major Investigation Team, quoting Operation Ursa, by calling 101.
