SCHOOL children in Bishop’s Waltham have been creating recipes as part of an event to increase footfall in the town.

Pupils from Bishop’s Waltham Infant and Junior schools were challenged to create dishes that could be served in cafes and restaurants, as part of ‘Bishop’s Waltham: Come Dine with Us’ week (July 14-19).

Infant school children designed cakes, sandwiches and biscuits, with the winning entries recreated for a special ‘Waltham Tea’, served in The Coffee House, Barringtons Deli & Cafe and Stainers Bakery on Saturday (July 19).

Year 3 junior school children created summer salad recipes, incorporating fish that they had tasted at an earlier workshop.

The entries were judged by a panel of four, including Dizzie Bruce from the Barleycorn Inn, which served two of the winning salads.

They were also on the menu at The Crown Inn, Piccola Roma, Giorgio’s Mediterranean Restaurant and Bar, and Banks Bar Bistro. The event was arranged as part of the Town Team’s commitment to increasing footfall and developing the town centre as a hub, and included tastings and cookery demonstrations.

Chairman, Tony Kippenberger, said: “By involving the schools in Town Team events, it really pulls together the community and connects everyone with the high street.”
