HE lost his sight three years ago, and now Richard Wheeler is campaigning to support the charity that gave him a voice.

The former Kings’ School, Peter Symonds College student and Brassiere Blanc barman developed Leber’s Hereditary Optic Neuropathy in 2011. It affects the optic nerve and means he lost the majority of his vision.

The 27-year-old says he hasn’t lost any independence, but people sometimes accuse him of exaggerating his blindness.

To raise awareness of his condition he teamed up with charity Fixers – which supports young people to campaign on an issue that matters to them, and made a film Seeing it Through My Eyes.

Now the charity has been shortlisted for ‘Best Charity’ in the National Lottery Awards, and Richard is keen for people to support them.

“After watching my Fixers film, people have told me that it has really helped them to understand and appreciate what life is like for me, and that feels really good,” Richard said.

“It has been brilliant to be given a platform to put my views across. People should vote for Fixers because they had a really important impact on my life.”
