WINCHESTER District Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) is urging people to “fight back against the fraudsters”.

New research found that up to four million people per year are victims of fraud, with the Winchester branch seeing 20 problems a year.

Offences rose by 25 per cent in England and Wales last year, with over a third of scams over the phone (34 per cent) and almost a quarter through web sites (24 per cent).

Scams Awareness Month was launched on May 1, and Jenny Meadows, CEO of Winchester CAB, said they can come in all shapes and sizes.

“Throughout May we will be helping people in the district to spot and report scams. We are advising people to speak to family and friends to make sure they are aware of some of the warning signs.

“Remember, if something appears too good to be true, it probably is.”
