WHEN a Twyford man decided to have his legs waxed in preparation for an epic charity cycle he didn’t quite know what he was letting himself in for.

Roger Walker, of Shawford Road, bared all to a group of ladies at a specially held evening of beauty and laughter to get his legs waxed ahead of a mammoth cycle ride which will see him travel from Land’s End to John O’Groats in June.

The evening (March 6) was in aid of Twyford-based charity Percy’s Pals and raised in excess of £650.

Over 40 women from around Winchester rallied to show their support buying jewellery from local designer Stella and Dot and enjoying a spot of pampering from mobile beautician Katie Osborne who ripped the follicles from Mr Walker’s legs much to many of the women’s amusement.

Mr Walker, 51, who runs his own travel company, said: “It was a rather painful evening for me, but all in aid of a good cause! Percy’s Pals are so grateful to all those who came along and supported the charity.” “Professional cyclists do it to be more aerodynamic and if you ever fall off and need treatment for a cut, the skin is cleaner without the hair.”

The charity, Percy’s Pals, was launched last year following the death of Twyford resident and Hedge End GP Richard Percival. Friends set up an appeal to raise £250,000 to buy a specialist portable CT brain scanner for the Wessex Neuro intensive care unit – part of Southampton General Hospital where Dr Percival was treated.
